Winter Sailing in Full Steam on the Surf Coast – Torquay Sailing Club

Torquay Sailing Club, on the raw and wild Victorian Surf Coast, has a dedicated race team hitting the water throughout winter.

With a new race officer, Paddy Gittings, the crew are sailing Hobie 14s, 14 Turbos and 16s with blue lips and white hands. Most Sundays, all that’s left to wonder is whether the air temperature will match the water temperature. Chris Hordern has also been instrumental in keeping the races running, joining Paddy in the rib.

Congratulations to Fletcher Warren-Myers for taking on the role as Commodore for Torquay Sailing Club for the foreseeable future. Many thanks and gratitude to Chris and Mai Hordern for their significant time at the helm. TSC is rapt to welcome both Chris and Mai into the life membership ranks.

Paddy has been doing a power of work in the background to build his skills through the Australian Sailing race officer courses, and the Victorian Hobie Family look forward to having him as a valuable resource to HCAV in the years to come.

The Surf Coast even had a visiting sailor — the legend Geoff Rowdon — make an appearance on his 14 during a glorious, sunny, light-wind day, with the swell living up to the Surf Coast name.

Torquay’s very own Mark Richards has been training hard for the Euros, and we wish him all the very best. Stay tuned for the results and news coming out of Poland in the coming weeks.

Finally, a large number of sailors have braced the chilly waters of the Bass Strait this winter. On the list includes: Zac Poole, Mads Gillard, Herman Voorhoeve, Mark Richards, Fletcher Warren-Myers, Georgia Warren-Myers, Gus Webb, Scott Howley, Sam Wood, Khan Harris-Moore, Mai Hordern, Oli Hordern, Tom Zdrzalka, Brenden Borosh, and Lana Borosh have all braved the icy waters of Bass Strait. With nine boats on the water some weekends, they like to think they’re putting their northern friends to shame.

Finally, a huge congratulations and shout out goes to the recent nuptials of Brendon & Lara Borosh (McCrae Nationals Artist) of Torquay, who with their son Addis, finally tied the knot!

Stay tuned for more action to come from our mates in the deep south!
